Hate crime alert: March 13 – March 19, 2019

There were three reported hate crimes in the City of Los Angeles for the week of March 13 – March 19. The total reported hate crime count from Jan. 1 – March 19 is 43.

 

We are tracking hate crimes and hate incidents reported to the Los Angeles Police Department this year. Each week, we’ll publish a hate crime alert. There is a data lag in the LAPD’s publicly available data, so we are publishing our weekly reports as the data become available. You can find March 6 – March 12 here and Feb. 27 – March 5 here.

 

The LAPD defines hate crime as “any criminal act or attempted criminal act directed against a person or persons based on the victim’s actual or perceived race, nationality, religion, sexual orientation, disability or gender.” The LAPD’s publicly available data do not always indicate why the police designated a particular crime as a hate crime.

 

 

 

 

 

 

How we did it: We examined publicly available LAPD data on reports of hate crimes. For neighborhood boundaries, we rely on the borders defined by the Los Angeles Times. Learn more about our data here.

 

LAPD data only reflects crimes that are reported to the department, not how many crimes actually occurred. In making our calculations, we rely on the data the LAPD makes publicly available. The LAPD does periodically update past crime reports with new information, which sometimes leads them to recategorize past reports. Those revised reports do not always automatically become part of the public database. We try to update our reporting when new data become available.
