Shoplifting incidents up on Black Friday

In 2017, the number of cases almost doubled.

Black Friday deals can seem like a steal. And, some shoppers apparently take that to heart, leading to a greater than usual number of shoplifting reports that day.

We compared the average number of shoplifting crimes for a day in November against the number reported on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. For each of the past eight years, shoplifting reports on Black Friday surpassed the average.

In 2011 in Los Angeles, there were more than double the number of shoplifting incidents on Black Friday (24) than on an average day in November (11). Last year, there were 34 shoplifting incidents reported on Black Friday, compared to a daily average of 18.
